What does the load capacity on a winch’s rating plate represent?
While the rating plate on the mechanism provides the maximum load capacity, that capacity is only for the first layer of rope on the drum. If a winch is rated for 8,000 pounds, the first layer of rope is rated at 8,000, the second at 6,700, the third at 5,700 and then the fourth at 5,000 pounds.
